"Peony Pavilion", is a tale about "dreams" and "love". And it was performed for the first time as a ballet at Beijing's Tianqiao Theater, Thursday night.
Du Liniang, is the daughter of an official. Liu Mengmei, is a scholar. They meet in their dreams and there, fall in love. The girl dies from lovesickness for the man of her dream. Years later, when the scholar visits the place where the girl is buried, her soul returns and the lovers come together in a reunion.
The tale was written by Tang Xianzu over four hundred years ago. It has captured the hearts of countless audiences all over the world.
Renowned composer Guo Wenjing is responsible for the soundtrack, which set a modern tone for the ballet drama.
Guo Wenjing, Composer, said, "I blended Kunqu opera, western classical music and my own composition for the score. I think the Chinese classics can be adaptable to more things."
The National Ballet of China adapted the ancient classic. Avant garde scriptwriter Li Liuyi created the poetic narrative. Composer Guo Wenjing blended Chinese opera.

The ballet "Peony Pavilion" is the latest Chinese classic adapted and performed by National Ballet of China. Earlier it had done a similar adaptation on "Raise the
Red Lantern". "Peony Pavilion" will run at Tianqiao Theater for seven consecutive nights. For ballet lovers and fans of the "Peony Pavilion", it's a prime ticket during the May day holiday.
