China's traditional Dragon Boat Festival Celebrated each year on the fifth day of the fifth month of the traditional Chinese calendar, the festival was first designated to commemorate one of the greatest Chinese patriotic poets -- Qu Yuan.
He drowned himself in the Miluo River in South China's Hunan province more than 2,000 years ago. This, in hopes of awakening the King to revitalize the Chu Kingdom. This background may sound remote to today's younger generation. But the festival's most important essential, Zong Zi, still has wide appeal.
The glutinous rice cakes wrapped in bamboo or reed leaves have been one of the hottest-selling food products on the shelves of shopping centers across China. Many new flavors this year, including fruit and seafood fillings, have become quite popular. But in many cities, people still love to make Zong Zi by themselves finding this time-honored tradition one of the greatest joys of the festival.
