The history of Beijing Hutong can be recorded from Yuan dynasty, adding up to over 6 thousand in number. The earliest one linked Chao Yang Men Nei Ave. to Dongsi, and was built in good order. The distances between were almost the same. Generally, the paths with north south direction were called avenue, and they were wider, such as South and North Xiaojie from Beijing railway station to Chao Yang Men Nei Ave. and the path with west and east direction were called Hutong, and they were narrower, serving for pedestrians. On the sides of Hutong were always aquare yards.

Today, Beijing Hutong culture has developed into a new tourism project, which is called as Hutong routine.
